Finding a garage you trust is one of the most valuable things you can do as a car owner — and one of the hardest, because the whole relationship runs on information you don't have and they do. Here's how to tilt the odds towards honesty.

The green flags

  • They explain the problem in plain English and show you the worn part
  • They give a written estimate before starting, and call before any extra work
  • They don't pressure you into unnecessary jobs 'while it's here'
  • They keep proper records and stamp your service book
  • Good independent reviews, and a recognised scheme like the Good Garage Scheme or Motor Ombudsman

The red flags

  • Vague pricing and a final bill that bears no resemblance to the estimate
  • A long list of urgent extra work 'discovered' mid-service
  • Reluctance to show you the old parts or explain the why
  • No paperwork, no record, no guarantee on the work

The whole business runs on trust, because the customer can't see what we see. The good garages never forget that. The bad ones exploit it.
