Brakes are the one system where 'I'll get to it next month' is genuinely dangerous. The reassuring part is that they almost always warn you first — if you know what the warnings sound and feel like.
The sounds
- A high squeal when braking: pads are worn down to their wear indicators — time to replace
- A harsh grinding: the pads are gone and metal is contacting the disc — stop driving and get it seen immediately
The feelings
- Vibration or pulsing through the pedal: often warped discs
- A soft or spongy pedal: possible air in the lines or a fluid problem
- A pedal that slowly sinks to the floor: a serious hydraulic issue — do not drive
- The car pulling to one side under braking: a sticking caliper or uneven wear
